The basics of learning German
Before looking at the tools that can replace your standard German lessons, it is important to know the different skills to master when learning this language. There are several:

German writing
Writing, along with speaking, is one of the two essential points to master in order to communicate in a language. This is why learning to write in German is one of the bases of your learning.

Do not panic, however: German uses the same Latin alphabet as in French, with the exception of one letter. This is the ß, or scharfes (high S), which is the old form of the “sz”. It is used to indicate how the word is pronounced. It is used after a vowel or a diphthong, even if it is found less and less in writings in German. Indeed, it is quite possible to replace this letter with a simple “ss”.

Learning to write in German should therefore not pose too many problems for you, unlike other languages which use a completely different alphabet than ours!

When you want to progress in oral German, you have to think about working on your pronunciation. Indeed, if you do not pronounce your words in the right way, you will have difficulty making yourself understood.

German can seem like a difficult language to speak when you’re just starting out. However, the more familiar your ear becomes with the pronunciation of German words, the easier it will be to pronounce them!

It is impossible to learn a language without knowing its vocabulary. It may seem tedious, but it is an essential step in learning a language.

To start, just learn the most common words, which will serve you from the start. No need to learn complicated words that you certainly won’t use in everyday conversation!

German grammar
Like vocabulary, grammar is an essential part of learning a language. Without it, you will not be able to form understandable sentences.

French and German grammars are different: you will therefore have to work on the latter to know how a sentence is constructed in this new language that you wish to speak.

For example, there are more articles in German than in French, since these agree not only in gender (masculine, feminine or neuter) and in number, but they also make it possible to know the case of the noun they precede (accusative, genitive, dative or nominative). There are definite (der, die, das) and indefinite (ein, eine) articles. In addition, the syntax of sentences in German is much more flexible than in French. The order of the words will therefore not necessarily be the same: among other things, it is quite possible to begin an affirmative sentence with its object.

Finally, a person’s language level is assessed according to four language skills. These are written comprehension (reading), oral comprehension (listening), written expression and oral expression. It is therefore necessary to master these four skills to completely master a language.

Some people find it easier to express themselves orally, while others will understand writing more easily. In any case, do not neglect any of these skills and work on them all. For this, in addition to German lessons, there are several resources that will allow you not only to work on your writing, but also your speaking.
